Introducing Àaló Quarterly
Hello,
It has been a while since you received a newsletter from Àaló.
That being said, the first quarter of 2026 is almost over. And it has been a rather eventful quarter, on the local and global stage.
It has been eventful on the personal stage for me, too. I started going to the gym and quit, prepared for a professional examination, wrote it and passed, and I haven’t done as much writing as I wanted because I couldn’t make time for it. I hope to correct course as we enter the second quarter of the year.
For Àaló, we used the first quarter of the year to wrap up the first season of Talk with Jeremy, which is available on YouTube. Please watch, like, subscribe and share.
We also sent a call for submissions to writers for the first issue of Àaló Quarterly.
For our first issue, we asked for poems, short fiction and creative non-fiction that evoke memories of being Nigerian or share uniquely Nigerian experiences. We were so lucky to have received the submissions we had, and they resonated with us and with our Nigerian identity. It shifts between love, patriotism, nostalgia, loss and friendship. I also had the opportunity to speak with a Nigerian creator, Bayo Oduwole, host of the What a Joke Podcast, whom I have admired for a long time, for a spotlight segment on the podcast.
After receiving the submissions, the articles were sent to our in-house editor for approval before proceeding to the next phase of designing the quarterly. It has been such a surreal experience going through different iterations of cover pages and seeing the words on each page against a white background. I have had quite a lot of deliberations in the past couple of days and struggled with casting my aesthetic on Àaló.
At the end of all this, we are pleased to share with you the first issue of Àaló Quarterly.
I am so grateful to the contributors of this issue, and to Bayo Oduwole of What a Joke Podcast. They will always hold a special place in my heart.
And to you, dear readers, I hope you enjoy our labour of love.
With love,
